minerals, gemstones, and jewelry. This site
provides detailed information and excellent photos
of many minerals and gemstones.
The Dothan Gem & Mineral Club is a group of amateur, yet enthusiastic rock hounds. We
meet the 4th Sunday of the month at the Fellowship Hall of the Tabernacle United
Methodist Church, 42o5 S. Brannon Stand Rd. and Hwy 52 S., Taylor, AL. Our usual
meeting time is from 2 -4 pm.
Club meetings include food, fellowship, and fun. The group watches educational programs
about the formation of various gems and mineral deposits, how and where to best hunt for
particular gems and minerals, and how to clean, cut, polish and display your finds. We
learn to make jewelry and many different kinds of decorative art. Members bring their
latest finds as meetings always include show and tell.
About Us
Dothan Gem & Mineral Club
While few in the group are gemologists, mineralogists, or geologists we do have some
expertise among the members. Several of our members have workshops that can rival
most professional gem cutting and polishing businesses. They are always happy to
work with the new people who have never used any type of rock cutting, grinding or
polishing equipment.
The group also hosts an annual Gem & Mineral Show, typically in April of each year.
The show attracts vendors from all areas of the country.
The International Gem Society
This site provides some great resources on physical
and optical properties of gemstones and explains
how those properties are used to identify gems.
There are illustrated articles and charts to help
simplify tricky identification problems.
